Esenboğa Airport reaches Level 4+, a further step toward its net zero emissions goal

Ankara Esenboğa Airport has achieved Level 4+ certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program led by ACI EUROPE. As Türkiye’s first carbon-neutral airport, Esenboğa has also become the first in the country to reach this advanced level.

Operated by TAV Airports, a member of Groupe ADP, Ankara Esenboğa Airport has reached Level 4+ certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation  program, placing it among the world’s top 70 airports in environmental performance.

TAV Airports aims to achieve carbon neutrality across all airports it operates by 2030, and to reach net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

TAV Airports CEO Serkan Kaptan stated “Ankara Esenboğa became Türkiye’s first carbon-neutral airport in 2014. We are now proud to be the first in the country to attain Level 4+ certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program. As of today, four of our airports are carbon-neutral, and a total of 11 are enrolled in the program. Through investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency, we are steadily advancing toward our net zero goal. We will continue to work with all stakeholders to support the aviation industry's efforts in combating climate change.”

Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE  stated "We are proud to see Ankara Esenboğa Airport, operated by TAV Airports, leading the way for Turkish aviation on the path to net zero. Reaching Level 4+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation is a major achievement, making it the top performer for carbon management in the country. This is the result of a strong and lasting commitment to climate action, which started back in 2010 when the airport first joined the programme. With on-going CO2 reductions, robust emissions targets aligned with global climate goals and a clear long term carbon management plan, this new milestone reflects both ambition and sustained efforts to decarbonise. A huge well done to the whole team as they continue their journey towards net zero by 2050."

At Ankara Esenboğa Airport, emission reduction targets have been aligned with global climate goals, and a long-term carbon management plan has been developed. Remaining emissions have been offset through internationally recognized projects. In addition, employees regularly receive training on environmental protection, energy efficiency, and greenhouse gas reduction.

Eleven airports operated by TAV Airports are part of the Airport Carbon Accreditation program. Esenboğa is certified at Level 4+, Enfidha-Hammamet at Level 4, İzmir and Antalya at Level 3+ , Tbilisi, Skopje, Gazipaşa, Monastir, and Madinah at Level 2, and Milas-Bodrum and Batumi at Level 1.

The Airport Carbon Accreditation program was launched by ACI Europe in 2009 and currently includes 645 airports worldwide.
