Environmental Sustainability

According to the Global Risk Report 2022, published by the World Economic Forum during the Covid-19 pandemic when environmental threats became more tangible, the most important and long-term risks are related to climate risks. The risk of climate change is defined at the same level with the risk of pandemic and is followed by the destruction of biological diversity, environmental degradation due to human activities, and depletion of natural resources.

Within this context, TAV Airports reviewed its environmental commitments and demonstrated its determination to take an active role in the environmental transformation of the industry in 2021 as its corporate strategy. Environmental programs and action plans were prepared in line with the joint commitments in the Airports for Trust declaration to be supported by all subsidiaries. The updated governance structure encourages innovative projects and supports in-house entrepreneurship.

Within the scope of combating the climate crisis and energy management introduced by the European Green Consensus process, TAV Airports has established and applied the Greenhouse Gas Management System at the airports it operates in order to fulfill its commitments, including ground handling operations.

The greenhouse gas inventories prepared on the basis of airport and ground handling services are verified and registered annually by the independent audit company in accordance with the international ISO 14064-1 standard. TAV Airports’ combustion emissions (Scope 1), energy-related emissions (Scope 2), and Scope 1 and Scope 2 emission calculations (Scope 3) of stakeholders across the airports are also evaluated for verification.

Management systems covering the stages of creating, measuring, monitoring, reducing, and neutralizing the greenhouse gas inventory are also certified under the ACI Europe Airport Carbon Accreditation program.

As of 2021, TAV Airports’ ACA certifications are as follows:

- “Level 3+ Neutrality” at Izmir Adnan Menderes, Antalya, and Ankara Esenboga airports

- “Level 3 Optimization” at Enfidha Airport

- “Level 1 Mapping” at Milas Bodrum Airport

The efforts to establish the management system were initiated at Alanya Gazipasa Airport for certification in 2022.

In addition to our collaboration with ACI for airport carbon accreditation, we also cooperate in various dimensions (circular economy, diversity, comprehensiveness, etc.) of sustainability with Sustainable Development Association of which we are a member. In order to build the bridge between businesses and sustainable development goals, and to strengthen the role of businesses in sustainable development, we are a member of the Business for Goals Platform established by TÜSİAD, Türkonfed and UNDP.

Supporting its environmental commitments with low-carbon technology and infrastructure investments, TAV Airports’ HAVAS station building and warehouse at Istanbul Airport were designed and commissioned with sustainable design, construction, and operation criteria. These two LEED Certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) facilities integrate several environmental and human-friendly features in a healthier, more environmentally friendly, and economically efficient manner compared to traditional buildings.

Erosion and Sedimentation control plan was developed in order to minimize the damage to the environment and nature during the construction process by taking specific measures to prevent water and construction pollution. The amount of waste has been reduced by recycling and reusing the resulting wastes. The glass, electro-mechanical systems, and lighting systems design above international standards were selected to increase the building’s energy efficiency.

More than 20% efficiency was achieved in water consumption by using efficient armatures that preserve water. The water consumption for irrigation was reduced with the use of efficient irrigation systems in garden irrigation.

The amount of fresh air given to the spaces was kept above the international ASHRAE 62.1 Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality standard, low-emission materials were used, and thermal comfort conditions were observed in order to increase the indoor air quality during the use of the buildings.

Thanks to the solar power plant on Milas-Bodrum Airport’s car park, which was put into use in 2020, the total energy production was 1,138,283 kWh in 2020 and 1,872,503 kWh in 2021. Similarly, 278 MWh of energy was generated from solar power in Izmir.

Environmental management systems at TAV Airports are one of the most important tools for the implementation of environmental dimension of sustainability. The systems include systematic processes to minimize, manage, and monitor environmental risks that arise during operations. Essential component of our sustainability approach is having suppliers that adopt our values. When choosing our suppliers, we take their professionalism, operational skills, solution-oriented approaches and references into consideration as well as cost. Furthermore, we consider environmental and social criteria. We consider labor standards and human rights criteria under the supervision of our contracted suppliers. Environmental management systems cover all environmental factors such as energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, air quality, water consumption, waste management, and the impact of operations on nature and biodiversity. TAV Airports employees’ long years of experience in environmental management provide common benefits for all Group companies. TAV Airports, as a member of Groupe ADP, joined the commitments made to Act4Nature International on biodiversity.

In 2021 a total of 2,000,120 TL was spent as part of our environmental expenditures in TAV Esenboğa and İzmir airports. In 2021, we incurred one environmental fine worth of 96,561 TL at our TAV Esenboğa Airport.
